Concept

Imitation Learning

Training a policy from demonstrations rather than from rewards.

Definition

Imitation learning copies an expert's behaviour from collected demonstrations — behavioural cloning, DAgger, diffusion policies. It is the dominant paradigm in modern robot learning because demonstrations are cheaper and safer than online RL on physical hardware.

Common use cases

  • Robot manipulation
  • Driving
  • Game agents
