De afwegingsdriehoek is natuurlijkheid, latency en kosten. Flagshipstemmen zijn nauwelijks van menselijke narratie te onderscheiden maar hebben doorgaans een latency tot eerste byte van 200-600ms, prima voor batchsynthese maar traag in realtime chat. Streaming TTS (Cartesia, OpenAI Realtime, ElevenLabs Turbo) houdt de latency tot eerste byte onder 100ms door audio uit te zenden zodra het eerste foneem is gedecodeerd. Budgettiers draaien op flagship-snelheid maar met hoorbare robotachtige artefacten in lange zinnen.
Pas op met prosodie-besturing: zelfs de beste modellen leggen af en toe een eigennaam verkeerd, spreken een acroniem fout uit of verliezen de emotionele intentie in lange zinnen. Gebruik SSML-tags (waar ondersteund) of breek lange passages op in kortere stukken met expliciete frase-grenzen. Voor meertalige content controleer je de uitspraak op elke taalcombinatie voor je gaat live — sommige stemmen spreken vlekkeloos Engels en met zwaar accent Duits.
